before I adopted my lab mix Ace, I assumed I would find another fluffy, blond, golden-retriever-type like my family’s previous dog.
Thank goodness I was able to see beyond a dog’s appearance, because Ace is the complete opposite of what I described, yet he’s the best dog for me.
So I thought I’d ask you:
Do you tend to keep adopting or buying the same type of dog?
For example, I know some “Rottweiler people” who always get another Rottweiler. My uncle has had several cairn terriers, and other relatives of mine stick to beagles. I think we all know a few “Lab people” or “golden retriever people.”
I have a drooly, black lab mix with a smooth coat, blocky head, tuxedo markings and white feet.
So guess what kind of dogs I’m drawn to?

And here’s our new foster dog. Her name is Robin:
She’s like a mini me of Ace!

But the whole point of this post, really, is not my original question, but is there anything wrong with adopting lookalikes of your current dog/s?
Is there anything wrong with adopting the same types of dogs over and over?
I’d say no, as long as the people doing the adopting do not have unfair expectations for the newcomer.
Just because Ace is a “perfect” dog for me does not mean Robin is perfect for me. maybe she is, and maybe she isn’t but she’s not Ace. (And no, we aren’t thinking of adopting Robin. Not yet anyway. We’ll see.)
And while their may be some similarities between dogs of the same breed, each dog is still an individual, obviously.
Even more so when we’re talking about two mixed breeds like Ace and Robin. just because they look alike doesn’t mean they’re the same mix. Robin is about half Ace’s size, for example.
